About this place
For a taste of Hachihachiya’s signature dish, try the soft-shelled turtle hot pot in its smaller size, then add rice porridge to finish. One diner who tried both said they enjoyed the meal right through to the final porridge. Another described the broth as clear and light, with plenty of spring onion and daikon radish. The menu lists both large and small portions, and rice porridge is available as an extra. You can make the hot pot the centre of the meal or share it with other dishes.
Beyond the hot pot, the menu includes dishes well suited to drinks, such as horse-meat sashimi, other sashimi and grilled fish. One first-time diner wrote that the horse-meat sashimi made a lasting impression; the menu also lists it served with condiments. A specific account of the grilled chicken thigh describes a substantial whole piece, with crisp skin and mustard on the side. It is an option for a night when you want something grilled rather than hot pot.
The menu also lists kamameshi—rice cooked in an iron pot—and rolled omelette seasoned with dashi. That makes it possible to build a meal around fish and small plates or to choose something more filling. One diner enjoyed soft-shelled turtle hot pot and grilled chicken wings with bottled beer; another chose a bottled beer and paired sashimi and grilled dishes with sake.
The dining room is better suited to small groups than large parties. Solo diners have also visited, making it a comfortable choice for taking your time over a hot pot or a few individual dishes.
